This summer has been one of endless sunshine and heat. Living in one of the sunniest corners of the UK, I’m used to bright days here in Cornwall , but usually there’s a sea breeze to keep things just a wee bit cooler. This year, though, the heat has been intense.
As a Scot, I’m not exactly built for a hot, humid climate! It has felt more like the south of France than the Cornish coast. My mornings have become a ritual of opening every window to let in the cool air, then closing them again to keep the house shaded and still , a very European way of living. Evening dog walks have turned into gentle adventures through tree-lined paths, chasing the shade.
I’m not complaining too much , after a winter of constant rain, the sunshine has been glorious. Still, I’ve found myself wishing for just a wee bit of rain to revive my droopy garden.
A Creative Shift
The heat made it hard to stay productive in my studio over July, and I haven’t achieved quite as much as I’d hoped in recent weeks. But then, at last, the rain arrived today! The monsoon-like shower has cooled everything down, and I’ve felt my creative energy return.
Preparing for the Season Ahead
I’ve started making my mini felt trees for the Christmas market season, experimenting with a slightly larger version, and it’s going well. My goal is to have all the stock ready by the end of August.
Alongside that, I’ve been designing a 3D toadstool. The first prototypes turned out a wee bit too big, so I’m working on a miniaturised pattern and playing with different cap styles. I think it’s going to be a fun addition to my collection.
Stitching Something New
Looking ahead, I’m planning to design an embroidered Alice band , a new direction for my embroidery work and a chance to explore wearable designs. I’m excited to see where this idea leads.
So here’s to August: cooler days, renewed creativity, and plenty of stitching ahead.
