The Detached Fly Stitch is a wonderfully simple little stitch that creates V‑shaped marks that are perfect for adding texture and detail to your sewing. I often use it on felt animals, especially for creating feathery touches on handmade soft toys like my Dilly the Duck pattern.
It’s worked from three tiny points to form a neat loop, giving a lovely, subtle raised effect on the felt. It’s an easy stitch for beginners to learn, and once you get into the rhythm it becomes a calm, mindful part of the making process, adding real charm and character to your handmade creations.

Step 1 – Draw three dots in a triangle.

Step 2 – Bring the needle up from behind at dot 1.

Step 3 – Put needle back down at dot 2. Leave a loop.

Step 4 – Bring the needle out at dot 3.

Step 5 – Insert you needle under the loop.

Step 6 – Pull down and keep the tension on the thread with your spare hand.

Step 7 – Secure loop by inserting needle back into felt under loop thread at dot 3.
